The Path

She’d been down this path a thousand times before. And now she was going down it again.

It was so familiar to her that she could follow it in the dark. Her feet knew every detail – this protruding tree root, this small dip, the rock against which she never stubbed her toe.

Once, years ago, a horse had escaped from its paddock and stood on the trail on a pitch black night, silent, unmoving.

Yet she had sensed its presence and stopped a few feet short, waiting, unsure, until the horse moved slowly away, the swish of its tail broadcasting its identity.

She’d walked this path in summer, barefoot, hot dust puffing between her toes. She’d walked it in winter, plowing her way through thigh deep drifts. She’d scuffed autumn leaves and gazed overhead to watch winged formations of geese arriving, then departing, year after year until the measured passage of the seasons became a blur.

She’d sat at a table inside her cabin, looking at the path as it wound through a tunnel of over-hanging alder trees, trying to capture in watercolour the sense of a journey commencing, a route to every possible future.

The path to the outhouse.

The Story 365 project is a year-long marathon of short story writing, with a new story for every day of the year and posted on this website from May 1, 2011 – April 30, 2012. Stories must be a minimum of 200 words. Please help me by adding first line suggestions in the Comment section of any story.

Thank you for this first line to Allison Burgess and the others out at the Black Cat Ranch this weekend.
