For those of you who are participating in today’s writing workshop, the first challenge is to write 2 – 3 paragraphs starting with the line, “In the apartment building across from theirs, six storeys above the ground, a cat walks along a balcony railing.”

Extra points if you can identify the original Canadian writer.

Post your story as a comment to this post.

I invite all Hinton and area writers to join me at the Black Cat Guest Ranch at 2:30 p.m. on March 24 for an afternoon of writing. We’ll focus on short fiction, character development and anything else which comes up. If you live further afield, check in at this site or my Facebook page to see the writing challenges. You’ll be able to send in your writing to share with the rest of the group.

Starting this Sunday, December 2, I invite my readers to join in a writing workshop called ‘Sunday Stories.’

A first line will be provided to you and you’ll have one week to write a story of 600 words or less using the first line.  You can submit stories as a comment to this post. Your story will appear on this site and other workshop participants can make comments on your story. Please note that if you are interested in some day submitting your story to any print magazine or e-zine, it would be considered to be previously published.

Be sure to include your email address and your name as you want it to appear with your story.

Now that I’ve written over 265 short stories, I guess I’ve learned a thing or two! “Go Ahead – Jump” is the title of my workshop that I’ll be teaching from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 28.

The most important thing the Story 365 project has given me is a knowledge of the necessity to be fearless. You can’t write a story every day for a year if you’re fretting over whether you’ll be able to finish or if the story is good enough or if you are distracted by surroundings that are too – noisy, quiet, full of mischievous cats, drafty or lacking in coffee. You just have to get writing and trust to the process.

Most of all, you have to have fun with it. This is what I’ll be aiming for in our workshop.
