Deja Cat

I checked the machine, powered it up.  I felt a little anxious.  Burt asked if I wanted to take a sedative, but I declined.  After a few deep breaths I told him to set the dial for five minutes and hit the start button.

I know the cat hasn’t shown any sign of harm, he merely appears in the other room five or ten or fifteen minutes prior to the machine’s activation and waits passively until the times synchronize, then he disappears.  And the original cat hangs out in the machine room, doing cat-like things as if nothing out of the usual is happening.

It is possible to travel through time, backwards at least, but none of us know what it feels like, what the possibilities are.  As busy as I am, I’d be satisfied with gaining a few extra hours each day, just to catch up on my paperwork. Whenever we did the experiment, the cat was there, two places at once.  He just sits there, but I have bigger plans than that.

As for what it feels like, the cat isn’t saying, but I’ll soon know.

Burt hit the start button.

The Story 365 project is a year-long marathon of short story writing, with a new story posted every day on this website from May 1, 2011 – April 30, 2012.  Stories must be a minimum of 200 words.  Please help me by adding first line suggestions in the Comment section.

Deja Cat is the first of a series of short short stories using major science fiction themes.  Suggestions of themes are most welcome!
