We’re leaving now. This comes as a shock to you it seems, yet you’ve known all along that our stay was not to be forever. And frankly, you appear to have become tired of us, or at least to take us for granted.

Yes, at first you were enchanted with us. You spoke of little else than our beauty and how happy you were that we’d come to stay with you. You took hundreds of pictures. We’d catch you sometimes, just standing there and gazing at us with a silly look on your face.

You said we made you feel young again.

But then you seemed to expect that we’d be there always, we were a non-event, we became almost invisible. Sometimes we were even in the way, we noticed a coolness. We knew we would soon be outstaying our welcome.

We aren’t going quietly, you understand. We aren’t going to sneak away in the night. We’re going out with a blaze of glory, more beautiful than before. So achingly beautiful you’ll never want us to leave. We’ll be golden and flame, we’ll be fireworks, we’ll pirouette through the sky, we’ll spangle your forest trails with colour.

You’ll weep when we’re gone.
